Blackberry delivery confirmation

If you have some problems with message delivery to BB devices please use these steps.
It is very handy even if BBs are disappearing these days.

These steps can help test along the process to verify if the Blackberry is receiving messages.

1. Send an email to the user with in the subject line.
For example: “ test message”
2. If received on the device, you will get an email with subject “Blackberry Delivery Confirmation”
Example:
Your message:

TO:
SENT: 4/23/2011 11:35:40 AM
SUBJECT: test

has been delivered to the recipient's BlackBerry Handheld.

Alternatively you can run bbsrptest.exe from CMD.
This application is in Research In Motion folder.

iPhone 5s update

why so slow?
it shows 4h slowly downloading about 1.5GB heavy update.
I have attempted to do the factory reset of the phone, but it won’t allow me to do it without the update so I have to wait 4h.

Exchange certificates again

get-exchangecertificate | fl isselfsigned,notbefore,notafter,services,thumprint > c:\certs.txt

enable-exchangecertificate -thumbprint "" -services "none" -> for not self-signed certificates you are not able to change the Services value, this works only for self-signed ones

enable-exchangecertificate -thumbprint "" -services "POP,IMAP,SNMP,IIS"

remove-exchangecertificate -thumbprint ""

Entourage to Office for Mac mail migration

First of all this a big mystery.
Secondly you have to copy over Main Identity directory from
hard_disk_name/Users/user_name/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office X Identities/Main Identity
to the same folder on another Mac then fire up Entourage to confirm that the profile is visible and you can see old emails.
Then you can try rename existing identity directory in Office 2011 directory and copy over the identity from Office 2008. Verify that this works.
Alternative way is to copy subfolders one by one from Entourage to the desktop (it creates MBOX file) then drag it and drop it to Office 2011 for Mac. Direct copy is not supported.

What is the plan of action?????

My boss is asking me this question, but the main server has already crashed 3 times last week (someone else was on the case) and where was the plan of action at that time?
For me it was just a regular Monday morning where at least 2 servers have to be down.
Moreover I haven’t been at that client for about 6 months now or even more, the lead engineer is in the office next road fiddling with the phone system and I have to come up with the plan of action in the meantime firefighting desktop support cases. Continue reading What is the plan of action?????

Undelete files

I have been asked to install some software that will give ability to the user to recover single files that have been deleted by mistake.
Previously they were using very old software dated back to 2001.
I have found something that can do the trick and in free version gives you option to recover 1 file per search session. This software is called Undelete 360.

Problem joining to Microsoft domain?

Check if the DHCP is giving local server IP for DNS and also the external DNS address.
If there is an external DNS in place it will conflict.
To join to the domain without problems please manually specify local IP of the DNS server usually Windows Server. Join to the domain and switch back to auto.

VCE and Avanset

I would highly discourage you to go for this software.
There is very few alternatives, but this new Avanset pricing approach is ridiculous.
Read THIS article for more details.

Much better option is to get Android tablet, buy A+ VCE app on it and run tests this way.
The cost is just one off £8.

A solution to performance problems with Excel files

Excel slow performance or crashing particularly with large file size
Excel spreadsheets can suffer poor performance as a result of a variety of causes, on rare occasions, an incorrectly placed invisible marker that shows the last used row / column can be the cause.

To diagnose follow these steps:-

1 – Open the unfixed version of the spreadsheet
2 – Select the first tab, e.g. “Sheet 1”
3 – Hold the CTRL key and tap the “End” key on the keyboard, to find the last cell that Excel thinks has been used in the spreadsheet
4 – Notice that the selected cell is now very high, e.g. FD1048397. This is over a million rows down from top of the spreadsheet. This is why inserting and deleting rows create a heavy workload since these tasks require over a million rows to be shifted down or up to create or close a gap.

Steps to fix:-
1 – Make a copy of the spreadsheet so that you have a backup
2 – Select all the rows from row the last used row to the last marked row, in this example row 1048397.
3 – Delete all these rows. You will have to accept one or more warning messages and it may take a minute or two to complete depending on your computer.
4 – Press ALT and F11, to open the “Visual Basic For Applications” window
5 – Press CTRL G
6 – Type the command: ActiveSheet.UsedRange
7 – press enter
8 – Press ALT and F4, to go back to the main Excel window
9 – Press CTRL and END, to see that the last used cell is now a lesser location, for example FD400
10 – Save the spreadsheet and test it.

Secure wipe

shred --verbose -n1 /dev/sdX
in my case 20GB per about 12min
for 500GB hard drive just one pass will take about 4.5h
by default shred runs 3 different passes
or
badblocks -c 10240 -wsv /dev/

Exchange limitation – send as

If you have a user on the Exchange that have many specified aliases there is no way to actually allow that user to send emails from these secondary aliases. You can receive emails to these aliases, but no chance other way round.
The only workaround is to setup separate mailboxes with these secondary aliases and configure them in Outlook.

Symantec.cloud: ArchiveTools CloudLink

Two guys from Symantec were investigated why the sync is failing every time even when we have checked the credentials 15 times.
So the issue was that someone else has initially configured ArchiveTools – this software is not smart enough and ask for domain credentials twice in 2 different places.
When you go to Configuration -> Start Configuration Task List -> tick first option for Directory Sync -> first set of credentials -> and then on another screen where you add the domain controller it will ask you for credentials again.
And this is the place where the old password was remembered.
So what you have to do is to remove the entry and add the domain controller once again with new credentials.
Once I have changed that the sync went just fine.

Migration problems?

It can happen that you forget to remove the old server from the Exchange part of the Active Directory and then the new SBS server will complain that it cannot connect to the old server.
Please follow this or that guide to rectify the problem and associated with it errors 5015, 5016 in the even log.
